Thus, Spain joined the club of countries capable of creating submarines by national industry. Spain’s previous experience in this area is the construction of a submarine in the 1980s under the French S-70 project.

S-80 is a submarine 80.8 meters long, 7.3 meters in diameter, with a displacement of 3,000 tons. The crew is 32 people and the ability to take on board 8 more special forces. Underwater speed – up to 19 knots. Autonomy – 50 days.

The S-80 armament consists of heavy DM2A4 torpedoes and Tomahawk cruise missiles.

Construction of the S-81 began in 2007 and was significantly delayed either due to financial problems or identified structural shortcomings of the project. They were solved through a partnership with General Dynamics Electric Boat. At the same time, the length of the hull increased by 7 meters and the weight by 75 tons.

The expected S-80 series consists of 4 submarines that were laid from 2005 to 2010 and are expected to be delivered by 2029.
