Two key directions of BMP-1 modernization: a proposal from the Polish plant WZM

A modern unmanned combat module and a change in the design of the machine frame: a proposal to modernize the BMP-1 from the Polish plant WZM – says the Defense Express agency.

The Polish plant Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne (WZM) in Poznań is preparing a proposal for the modernization of BMP-1 combat vehicles. This year, the company plans to complete a prototype machine with a modified frame design, which will later be integrated with specialized equipment.

The modernization of the BMP-1 for Poland is an intermediate solution until the new Borsuk BMPs are fully deployed. This decision was made taking into account the fact that a lot of new machines will be needed, and they plan to produce new BMPs for several dozen machines a year.

Currently, there is a high probability that the task of modernizing the BMP-1 will be entrusted to the plant in Poznan, which has long been repairing and servicing infantry fighting vehicles for the Polish Armed Forces (three organizations claim to modernize the BMP-1 in Poland).

According to the Polish edition of Defense24.pl WZM SA, the proposal prepared by WZM involves changes in two key directions, as well as additional elements, including optional ones.

The first direction is to replace the obsolete tower with a modern unmanned combat module. Which one – is not reported, but it is claimed that this may be a decision from both the Polish manufacturer and foreign partners, and the final configuration may depend on specific requirements.

The second direction is a change in the design of the vehicle frame, which should increase the comfort and ergonomics of the crew, as well as facilitate the integration of new systems. This can also enhance safety if the customer decides to install explosion-proof chairs – this upgrade option has already been demonstrated at MSPO 2019.

There are also plans to replace internal and external communication systems with modern solutions – including those already used by the Polish military; replacement of electronic systems, as well as changes in the design of the chassis, etc. Options also include air conditioning replacement and drive upgrades.

This modernization proposal also provides for the preservation of the ability to overcome water obstacles by swimming.

It is noted that WZM is already preparing for the implementation of the BMP-1 modernization program. Thus, from 2019, tests are conducted related to the planned changes in the design, and a prototype of the vehicle is to be received at the end of this year.
