May 12 is World Nurse’s Day

The date was chosen for the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse and organizer of nursing.

Florence Nightingale (May 12, 1820, Florence – August 13, 1910, London) developed its own method of patient care, which is the basis of modern nursing care – with minimal costs and maximum effect, based on maintaining cleanliness in the wards, regular ventilation premises, diet, quarantine and attentiveness to patients’ complaints.

In 1853 she headed a private hospital in London. During the Crimean War of 1853-1856, together with 38 assistants, she worked for free in British field hospitals in the Crimea, where she implemented her own principles of care for the wounded. In less than 6 months, mortality in military hospitals has dropped from 42% to 2.2%.

Given the success of the Crimean War, Florence Nightingale was tasked with leading the reorganization of the British Army Medical Service. It has achieved the creation of special military medical schools, equipping hospitals with ventilation and sewerage systems; introduction of statistical information processing in hospitals, prevention in the army. Due to the changes, mortality in hospitals has decreased by more than 50%.

In 1912, the League of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent founded the medal. Florence Nightingale – the world’s highest award for nurses (it was awarded to about 20 Ukrainian women).

The work of nurses in Ukraine in recent years has been invaluable. It is especially important that they perform their duties in the area of Operation Joint Forces and in military medical facilities, where they save the lives and health of our defenders on a daily basis, risking their own lives.

Nurses are now also at the forefront of the fight against coronavirus disease, saving the lives of patients, on the verge of physical and mental exhaustion.

I am convinced that nursing is a vocation. This is not just a profession, but a state of mind, the most humane activity.

There is nothing more worthy than to do good, to alleviate the suffering of a person who trusts you with his life and health.

A low bow to you and respect!

I sincerely wish you good health, success at work, family well-being, happiness and prosperity!

May your hard work, which restores people’s health, bring joy and proper payment from the state!
